Introduction

Precast concrete piles are widely used in building foundations, excavation support, municipal power projects, and bridge foundations. These products vary in type and forming process, and are commonly manufactured at scale using steel molds and steam curing. Repeated mold opening and closing, together with high-temperature steam-curing cycles, place high demands on release-agent film stability, heat resistance, and corrosion protection for steel molds. Traditional oil-based release agents are often applied undiluted, resulting in relatively high overall usage costs. They may also cause oil stains and color variation on concrete surfaces, while oil vapors create strong odors in the production area. High-performance water-based release agents for concrete piles are increasingly used in precast production because they can be diluted with water, have low VOC content, and help protect steel molds. This guide covers selection, application, troubleshooting, and storage of water-based release agents for concrete piles under common production conditions.

1. Types of Concrete Piles and Demolding Conditions

Precast concrete pile products mainly include prestressed concrete piles, precast concrete square piles, and circular concrete poles. Each category includes different strength grades and reinforcement specifications. The main forming methods are centrifugal casting and static-mold vibration casting.

1.1 Prestressed Concrete Piles (PHC/PC/PRC Piles)

Prestressed concrete piles include PHC (pres tressed high-strength concrete) piles, PC (prestressed concrete) piles, and PRC (prestressed reinforced concrete) piles. They are generally produced using pretensioning followed by high-speed centrifugal casting. After forming, the piles undergo atmospheric-pressure steam curing; some high-strength piles are subsequently autoclave-cured.The steel mold consists of two halves: an upper mold and a lower mold. During high-speed rotation, centrifugal force pushes and compacts the concrete mix against the mold. The lower mold bears the pressure of the concrete, while slurry scouring is relatively mild. The upper mold is continuously exposed to splashing mortar, which can damage the release-agent film. During subsequent steam curing, the entire mold is exposed to high temperatures and humidity. The release agent must maintain a stable film at elevated temperatures and protect the steel mold against corrosion and wear.

1.2 Circular Concrete Poles

Steel molds used to manufacture prestressed concrete pipe piles Most circular concrete poles are also produced by high-speed centrifugal casting followed by steam curing. Their steel molds are similar to those used for centrifugal concrete piles, and the upper mold is subject to significant mortar splash. Large square poles designed for high bending moments are often produced by static-mold vibration, without centrifugal scouring.

1.3 Precast Concrete Square Piles (Solid or Hollow)

These piles are mainly produced by static-mold casting and vibration compaction. Some production lines use steam curing. The mold is subjected to relatively uniform forces, with no slurry splashing caused by centrifugal rotation.

2. Key Performance Requirements for Water-Based Release Agents for Concrete Piles

China Release Agent’s water-based release agent for concrete piles is a milky-white, viscous emulsion developed for steam-cured concrete piles and concrete poles. It is designed for use with steel molds.

2.1 High-Temperature Stability

Suitable for atmospheric steam curing. The release film remains effective at elevated temperatures to support demolding after steam curing.

2.2 Flexible Dilution Ratios

Can be diluted with water at ratios of 8:1 to 25:1. For centrifugal piles and circular poles, the lower mold can be diluted at 20:1 to 25:1 because it experiences less slurry scouring. The upper mold is exposed to stronger slurry scouring; a dilution ratio of 8:1 to 10:1 is recommended. For static-mold square piles and square poles, adjust the dilution ratio according to production conditions.

2.3 Steel Mold Corrosion Protection

Forms a protective film on steel molds to reduce corrosion, lower mold maintenance and polishing costs, and extend mold service life.

2.4 Improved Concrete Surface Quality

Helps produce smooth concrete surfaces and reduce defects such as pitting, air voids, sticking, and color variation, thereby reducing rejection rates.

2.5 Low VOC Content

Low volatile organic compound (VOC) content and mild odor help improve the working environment and reduce operator exposure to strong odors.

2.6 Cost Efficiency

Supports high dilution ratios, reducing release-agent consumption per unit area and overall application costs. One kilogram of diluted product can cover up to 20 m² of mold surface. 3. Practical Application Guidelines

3.1 Mold Preparation

Before applying the release agent, clean the inside of the steel mold and remove old concrete residue, loose rust, and oil. Keep the mold surface dry. Residual cement deposits can disrupt film formation and cause localized sticking.

3.2 Water Quality for Dilution

Use clean tap water only. Do not use groundwater or excessively hard water, as hard water may destabilize the emulsion and cause separation or loss of performance. Mix the concentrate thoroughly with water and prepare the diluted solution for immediate use. Do not store diluted product for extended periods. Recommended dilution ratios Centrifugal concrete piles and circular centrifugal poles: lower mold, 20:1–25:1; upper mold, 8:1–10:1. Precast square piles and static-mold square poles: begin testing at a dilution ratio of 3:1–5:1, then adjust based on actual production conditions.

3.3 Application by Brushing or Spraying

Low-pressure air spraying is preferred; manual brushing is also suitable. Apply a thin, continuous, uniform film. Avoid excessive application or pooling, as a thick coating may cause air voids and color variation on the concrete surface. Worker applying a coating to a precast concrete pipe pile

3.4 Film Drying Time

After application, wait 10–20 minutes for the film to become surface-dry before placing concrete. If the emulsion has not dried and is exposed to the mix—especially during centrifugal casting—it may be washed away, causing mold sticking. Allow more drying time in low-temperature conditions.

3.5 Demolding Strength

Demold when the concrete compressive strength has reached at least 20 MPa. If demolding strength is too low, the concrete may lack sufficient cohesion, leading to surface tearing or spalling even when the release agent performs well.

4. Water-Based Release Agents Compared with Traditional Oil-Based Release Agents

Comparison Water-Based Release Agent for Concrete Piles Traditional Oil-Based Release Agent
Dilution Can be diluted with water; use different ratios for upper and lower molds in centrifugal casting, and adjust as needed for square piles. Applied undiluted; cannot be diluted with water.
Overall application cost Lower cost after dilution; economical in use. Higher purchase and application costs.
Steel mold protection Provides corrosion protection. Conventional mineral-oil products offer limited corrosion protection.
Concrete surface Less likely to cause oil stains; lower risk of color variation. Oil accumulation may cause surface staining and yellowing.
Working environment Low VOC content and mild odor. Strong oil odor; mold and shop-floor oil residues are difficult to clean.
Limitation Requires time for the film to become surface-dry and suitable dilution water. Ready to use; no drying time required.

5. Common Production Defects: Causes and Solutions

Defect Likely cause Corrective action
Localized mold sticking Excessive dilution of the upper mold in centrifugal casting; concrete placed before the film is surface-dry; missed areas during spraying; insufficient demolding strength. For centrifugal casting, keep the upper-mold dilution ratio at 8:1–10:1; allow 10–20 minutes for surface drying; check spray coverage; ensure demolding strength is at least 20 MPa.
Pitting and air voids on concrete Excessive application or pooling; inadequate mold cleaning; incomplete film formation. Apply a thin, even coat; remove all residue from the steel mold; allow sufficient drying time.
Color variation Uneven application; rust or old material remaining on the mold surface. Apply evenly; clean and maintain steel molds regularly; adjust the dilution ratio.
Emulsion separation after dilution Groundwater or hard water used; insufficient mixing. Use clean tap water; mix the concentrate and water thoroughly; prepare for immediate use.

Concrete pile products include centrifugal piles, precast square piles, circular concrete poles, and square concrete poles. They are produced by centrifugal casting or static-mold vibration, so release-agent selection and application should be tailored to the product and process. For centrifugal products, using different dilution ratios for the upper and lower molds is key to reliable release. For square piles and square poles produced in static molds, adjust the dilution ratio based on actual conditions. Proper product selection, uniform application, adequate film-drying time, and control of demolding strength can reduce consumable costs, improve concrete surface quality, and protect costly steel molds.
